Important Facts About Electrostatic Precipitators and their Uses

Electrostatic precipitators are the systems that are used for cleaning the air. It works simply by using electricity to remove the pollutants from the air. Different ESP parts play different roles in clearing the air from pollution. An electrostatic precipitator uses a series of plates that helps to trap the airborne dust particles. Unlike the traditional method of clearing the air, using ESP is a better option, and it works quickly and more effectively.

In any industrial setting, ESP works fine by successfully removing the fumes from the air. There are generally two plates in an ESP, out of which one has a negative charge, and the other has a positive charge. The collision of these two plates generally generates an electrical charge emitted and transported into the air.

The emitted charge grabs the pollutants moving around in the air and effectively removes the pollutants from the air, thereby clearing the same. You must clear the plates often to remove the dust particles that have been collected in them.

Uses of electrostatic precipitators in different industries

Industries where the air gets polluted with emissions during the manufacturing process generally use ESP for clearing the air. Hence, you can find ESP in the following industries:

  • Manufacturing units of cement plants
  • Power-generation plants
  • Hazardous waste management centres
  • Manufacturing and refinery of petroleum
  • Plants involved in lead, zinc and copper smelters

Plants involved in the production and manufacturing of steel

What are the different types of electrostatic precipitators?

All industries generally use two major precipitators, namely the plate precipitator and the wet precipitators. A row of vertical wires is fitted in this ESP type, and they are responsible for the charge. A wet precipitator works differently. They work best by removing the liquid particles from the air successfully. Since both the precipitators work in different ways removing different types of particles, hence industries prefer using them both as per their convenience.

Advantages of using an electrostatic precipitator

Using ESP helps in the following ways:

  • They efficiently remove the wet and dry dust particles from the air, even at high temperatures.
  • They have high dust collection efficiency for large and small particles.
  • They can handle large gas volumes and heavy dust loads in every construction or manufacturing unit.
  • They are highly durable and don’t require high maintenance, and can be used by industries for a long time.

Know in Details About Electrostatic Precipitator

Industrial equipment releasing harmful emissions into the air are largely dependent on the use of electronic precipitators to control the emission rates since the specific heavy metals are highly stringent. Also known as electrostatic cleansers for eliminating impurities, either air or gas, solid, liquid, smokestack and other fuel, this precipitator functions effectively by applying energy to the collected particulate matter without impeding the gas flow out of the equipment. Hence, they are beneficial devices for air pollution control. You can consult a professional company for ESP internal supply

Initially, the product’s design was for recovering valuable industrial process materials, while now it is efficient in removing harmful industrial particulate matter from waste gas and power generating stations. If the harmful matter is allowed to release into the atmosphere, it will reduce visibility in the air, contribute to climate change, consequently causing severe health issues in individuals like lung damage, heart diseases, bronchitis etc. These electrostatic precipitators can capture fine particles that are smaller than 2.5 microns and are highly dangerous when released into the atmosphere.

Design and Procedure

The electronic precipitators function by charging the particles in the gas stream electrostatically. The particles which are charged gets attracted to the plate and other kinds of collection devices. The treated air now passes through the precipitator, through a stack to the atmosphere. After enough particles accumulate on the collection device, the collectors shake it off via mechanical rappers. Be it dry or wet, these particulates now fall into the hopper at the bottom of the unit. The conveyor system transports it away for safe disposal. The ESPs also have denitrification units that remove nitrogen oxide and scrubbers removing Sulphur dioxide.

Advantages of ESP

  • It has high durability and strength
  • It effectively collects both dry and wet impurities
  • The operating cost is extremely low
  • The collecting capability of the device is high for smaller particles
  • It is designed to handle a large volume of gas along with heavy dust loads at low temperature
